Be prepared for hazardous materials incidents in the workplace with our comprehensive HAZMAT Response Course. Designed for workers and Emergency Response Teams, this course provides participants with the skills and knowledge needed to identify, monitor, and safely manage HAZMAT emergencies on-site.

Combining essential theory with hands-on practical training, the course covers assessing incident scenes for hazards, selecting, wearing, and testing protective clothing such as splash and gas-tight suits, identifying and safely handling hazardous materials, establishing hazard control and decontamination zones, managing confinement or containment strategies, executing decontamination processes, and performing rescue procedures in simulated HAZMAT scenarios.

Hazardous materials incidents encompass a wide range of scenarios involving substances with chemical, biological, radiological, or physico-chemical properties that may pose significant threats to life, property, or the environment. These include dangerous goods, hazardous chemicals, and goods too dangerous to transport.

With a strong emphasis on both underpinning knowledge and practical application, this training ensures participants gain the confidence and competence to effectively respond to hazardous situations.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Mins
Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 16 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Participants must be clean shaven to attend the course, in accordance with AS/NZS 1715:2009. Facial hair within the sealing area can compromise the effectiveness of the respirator, impacting its ability to provide proper protection.
  • PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit* *It is essential that the prerequisite unit listed are obtained prior to the issuance of this unit to individuals within the fire sector or the units contributing to the attainment of a fire qualification.
  • For individuals not within the fire sector or the unit is not contributing to the attainment of a fire qualification, it is best practice and highly recommended for individuals to have the underpinning knowledge and current industry experience of operating breathing apparatus open circuit.
  • Psychological and physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstrations for this course. This includes undertaking the requirements to safely enter and work in an environment with detectable but safe levels of contamination; and use different types of detection equipment wearing appropriate PPE including chemical protective clothing and breathing apparatus. This may also involve climbing up, down, through or under structures or confined spaces, and restricted environments in dark, low light or smoke-filled areas.
  • Protective footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment.
  • Language, literacy and numeracy requirements - students must be able to read and correctly interpret required documentation, speak clearly and unambiguously in English, explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues and understand the permit requirements. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports. Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly differentiate between high and low pressures and temperatures, voltages or masses and interpret gas test/monitoring results.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Practical Performance Tasks and Scenarios:

  • Chemical spill near waterway and complete an incident report form
  • Managing fire and flammable chemical risks in site and a minor contamination incident

Documentation – The student must complete the following documentation:

  • two (2) HAZMAT Action Guides

Theory assessment -   A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions.
